[WATCH/STREAMS!] Argentina vs Brazil Live Free Online Broadcast 21 November 2023

Quite a lot has happened in the two years since Brazil and Argentina last met. For one, the Albiceleste won the World Cup, though it's probably safe to assume that there'll be no red carpet rolled out for Lionel Messi at the Maracana today, especially as the hosts are currently riding a two-game slump in 2026 World Cup qualifying. Brazil's World Cup qualifying campaign is off to a poor start

Brazil are all the way down in fifth in the South American section of qualifying, though if he's feeling the pressure, interim head coach Fernando Diniz certainly isn't showing it. The ultimate football purist, he's already shown that it's possible to win big without compromising your principles, having led Fluminense to Copa Libertadores glory just this month.

Neymar's semi-retirement and subsequent injury was supposed to give Vinicius Junior the platform to flourish as Brazil's main man, but the Real Madrid flyer succumbed to a hamstring injury in the 2-1 defeat to Colombia last week. That followed a disappointing 2-0 loss at the hands of Uruguay in October.

Argentina fell to the same opposition by the same scoreline in a bad-tempered affair on Thursday, one that saw the performance of Messi in particular come in for heavy criticism. The Inter Miami man did not take kindly to some of the jibes that were aimed in his direction, retorting that some players should show more respect to their elders.

Brazil vs Argentina is one of the spiciest rivalries in soccer. There's no love lost between South America's big two with a shared history of barnstorming fixtures, on-field fights and drinks bottles laced with tranquillisers, so expect fireworks. The last time the pair met at the Maracanã was in the 2021 Copa America final, won by Argentina as Leo Messi won his first major international tournament.

Brazil has made an unexpectedly poor start to World Cup 2026 qualifying. A Seleção has won just two of its first five matches, losing its two most recent fixtures to Uruguay and Colombia. Though six of the 10 teams qualify by right for the finals, caretaker boss Fernando Diniz – who also doubles as Fluminense manager – will be desperate for his side to get back on the winning trail. They'll have to do so without injured pair Neymar and Vinicius Jr, the latter tearing a hamstring in the 2-1 defeat to Colombia last Thursday. Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli scored in that loss and will again look to add some thrust to a team short on confidence.

Argentina, meanwhile, lost its first fixture since the surprise defeat to Saudi Arabia in the World Cup 2022 group stage in Qatar a year ago. The reigning world champions lost 2-0 to a resurgent Marcelo Bielsa-managed Uruguay on Thursday but still top the group with four wins from five. Messi remains the star and, despite this technically being his off-season with Inter Miami not in the MLS play-offs, returns to the site of his first major honour for his country. Though the antipathy is fierce between both countries, there's a certain respect for the great No10 in Brazil, but once the game kicks off, Lionel Scaloni's side should expect an atmosphere as hostile as it gets.

Both Brazil and Argentina will be looking to bounce back from their respective defeats in the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers when the two rivals clash at the Maracana on Tuesday.

The 2-1 loss against Colombia leaves Brazil winless in their last three games in the South American qualification section, while Argentina were humbled by a 2-0 loss against Uruguay the last time out.

On his way to Real Madrid next year, Endrick made his debut in the Colombia loss. He may make the bench again, along with Gabriel Jesus who returned to training following a hamstring problem.

With Vinicius Jr forced off with a hamstring issue of his own in the same game, his replacement Joao Pedro is unlikely to start ahead of Gabriel Martinelli here.

All of Ederson, Danilo, Eder Militao, Casemiro, Neymar and Richarlison remain unavailable for selection, while Douglas Luiz may feature alongside Andre and Bruno Guimaraes in midfield.

La Albiceleste boss Lionel Scaloni may recall Lautaro Martinez ahead of Nicolas Gonzalez in the final third, which would see Julian Alvarez switch to a wide role.

Rodrigo De Paul should remain as the mainstay in the middle, while Alejandro Garnacho has been left out of the squad.

Lisandro Martinez is out with a foot injury.

While the derby is already attractive by itself, this specific game looks interesting as both sides will be looking to bounce back. Last time out, both the Verde-amarela and La Albiceleste lost.

Fernando Diniz‘s men have failed to pick up a victory in their last three games, having suffered back-to-back defeats in their last two matches. Lionel Scaloni‘s team, on the other hand, has recently suffered its first loss in 2023 at the hands of Uruguay.

Arsenal attacker Gabriel Martinelli's fourth-minute goal put Brazil on course for victory in Colombia on Friday until Luis Diaz intervened in the 75th minute and added a second four minutes later to give the hosts a surprise 2-1 win.

On the same night, Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay ended Argentina's perfect record in the group with a surprise 2-0 win in Buenos Aires, moving them two points behind the World Cup holders at the top of the CONMEBOL qualifying group.

Brazil are five points off Argentina after an uncertain qualifying campaign so far, also losing 2-0 in Uruguay in October, shortly after they were held to a draw by a late Venezuela equaliser in a 1-1 draw in Cuiaba.

The major news for Brazil is a knee injury that forced attacker Vinicius Jr out of the Colombia game during the first half and could keep the Real Madrid livewire out until 2024. Manchester United midfieler and Brazil captain Casemiro is out of the current squad with a hamstring injury. The Seleção are also without Neymar due to a long-term knee injury.

Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho didn't make the Argentina squad, which is a sign of how much strength in depth manager Lionel Scaloni can call upon in his squad. Lionel Messi will surely start in a free role, with the likes of Rodrigo de Paul and Enzo Fernandez tasked with covering the ground behind him.

They are favourites against Argentina, but could be hampered by Vinicius Jr becoming their latest attacking absentee. A low-scoring draw could be on the cards between teams who have netted a total of nine goals across their last eight matches combined.
